I fee l like this poem represents my voice. Mya Angelou did a fantastic job with this poem, and it sounds like something i would try to create!
Pretty women wonder where my secret liesI'm not cute or built to suit a model's fashion sizeBut when I start to tell them They think I'm telling lies. I say It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips The stride of my steps The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally Phenomenal woman That's me.
I walk into a room Just as cool as you please And to a man The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees Then they swarm around me A hive of honey bees. I say It's the fire in my eyes And the flash of my teeth The swing of my waist And the joy in my feet. I'm a woman Phenomenally Phenomenal woman That's me.
Men themselves have wondered What they see in me They try so much But they can't touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them They say they still can't see. I say It's in the arch of my back The sun of my smile The ride of my breasts The grace of my style. I'm a woman Phenomenally Phenomenal woman That's me.
Now you understand Just why my head's not bowed I don't shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud When you see me passing It ought to make you proud. I say It's in the click of my heels The bend of my hair The palm of my hand The need for my care. 'Cause I'm a woman Phenomenally Phenomenal woman That's me. http://www.feminist.com/resources/artspeech/insp/maya.htm

Cool poem! I love the rhythm and the imagery. If you write a poem in this manner, please post it!
Well, beside knowing the background to this poem at SMASH, I would have to say that this is a good poem. It describes the way women feel and the usage of imagery only adds to the poems overall message. I also like how she used different parts of her body to only emphasis her importance in life and her individuality...
Ooohhh! That was deep. I think you do have some of the same traits as Maya Angelou in the terms of being an Phenomenally Phenomenal woman. You are seen by others as a leader and you gain respect and give respect everywhere you go. You show no fear to anyone and you always have your head held high. Nice to see you choose a poem that conveys you. I hope even in college that you keep on being a Phenomenally Phenomenal women.
I like your choice of poem becuase i reall;y think that it reflects your feminist voice. I feel connected to this poem too becuase it talks about the strength of women which I value a lot. I think this poem also reflects who you are and your interest in women's studies which relates to your SRI topic. I was hoping I could see your journals so that I could comment of them.

Hey G, this was a really good choice of poem for you. I think especially since you do not always voice your opinions in the most forceful ways, this poem was a good outlet for you to express your self. I liked the repetition in the poem because it emphasized the speaker more and more as being a phenominal person and i can also see you reflected in this poem. So good job.
